Find out what it pays before you apply

A job board tells you what is open. It does not tell you whether the money is any good, what is left of it where you would be living, or who in that state has already put a number on paper. Start with those, and the search gets shorter.

Start with what you do. You will get what it pays in every state, what is left after local prices and state tax, who has filed wages for it, where it is growing — and what is open right now.

Or drop your résumé and we will work out the occupation for you, in your browser.

Why the highest-paying state is the wrong target

A postal carrier in Washington DC earns a median of $64,250, which is worth $58,462 once local prices are taken out. The same job in Arkansas pays $59,700 — worth $68,668. Of the 812 occupations we publish, the reversal is common enough that the published ranking is the wrong place to start.

Pay for every occupation

What an employer already put in writing

Companies that sponsor visas have to state the wage, and those filings are public. It is the only source of company-level pay in the United States that nobody self-reported, and it is the number to walk into a negotiation holding.

Whether a machine can read you at all

The first thing between you and any of these openings is software. Drop your résumé and see which occupation it files you under and where it cuts you — in your browser, with nothing uploaded.

Keep track of where you applied

A list of where you are applying is the most sensitive thing you will write while employed. Ours stays in your browser and exports to CSV, so it is portable and it is not ours.
